Aberlour 14 years Double Cask Matured

Score: 70

In our June 2021 club tasting, which was an open lineup with no set theme, Aberlour 14 Year Double Cask Matured quietly charmed its way into third place. Matured for 14 years in first-fill American oak and Oloroso sherry butts, this Speyside expression pours at 48% ABV, trading high-octane fire for a softer, more inviting warmth. On the nose, toffee-drizzled red berries and warm cinnamon mingle with a hint of freshly baked gingerbread. The palate delivers honeyed orchard fruits, spiced raisins and a gentle swirl of cracked pepper, all held together by a polished oak frame. Its finish lingers on sweet orange rind and soft oak spice, leaving a cozy glow rather than a punchy kick. While a few tasters wished for a higher proof, most appreciated how seamlessly the sherry and bourbon cask influences play together, making this 14-year-old dram a perfectly approachable companion for relaxed evenings and friendly gatherings.
