Aberfeldy 12 years
Aberfeldy 12 years opened the 6th 2025 tasting with a warm welcome, an easygoing Highland single malt that set the tone for the tasting with charm and approachability. Often dubbed the “Golden Dram,” it’s matured in a mix of sherry, bourbon, refill, and re-char casks, and bottled at 40% ABV. While it doesn’t aim to dazzle with complexity, it delivers a well-rounded profile that’s hard not to enjoy. The nose offered soft honey, dried apricot, and red apple, with hints of vanilla and a touch of clove spice drifting in. There was a gentle oak presence, and just the faintest whisper of smoke, more suggestion than statement. On the palate, it was buttery and smooth, with notes of apple compote, citrus peel, and caramel. A subtle salinity added interest, while baking spices like cinnamon and nutmeg gave it a comforting warmth. The finish was mellow and clean, with roasted nuts and a light oak spice lingering just long enough. As the opening dram, Aberfeldy 12 did exactly what it needed to: it invited conversation, eased the palate into gear, and reminded the room that whisky doesn’t always need to be loud to be loved. It may not have competed for top honors, but it played its role with quiet confidence, setting the stage for the evening’s bigger personalities to follow
