Oban Distillers Edition 1998 - 2013

Score: 70

Oban Distillers Edition 1998–2013 is a Highland single malt that underwent double maturation, first in traditional bourbon casks, then finished in Montilla Fino sherry butts for 6 to 18 months. Bottled at 43% ABV, it’s a refined take on Oban’s coastal style, layering in dry fruit and spice from the sherry wood without losing the distillery’s signature balance. The nose is mildly sweet and aromatic, with dried plums and orange rind offering a restrained fruitiness, not cloying, just elegant. On the palate, this Oban has a medium viscosity and is slightly oily in the mouth. It is pleasantly spicy and fairly dry, thanks to its time in sherry casks. When sipped neat, sweeter notes appear first, then the spiciness builds, cinnamon and pepper warmth rising gently, never overpowering. The finish is lasting and clean, with a pleasant burn at the front of the mouth. For club tastings, it’s a contemplative dram: not flashy, but quietly complex, and a great example of how sherry finishing can elevate without overwhelming.
