Thomson Two Tone
Score: 66
Thomson Two Tone, bottled at 40%, is a New Zealand whisky that knows how to charm a crowd. A blend of single malt aged in both ex-bourbon and New Zealand red wine casks, it brings a vibrant, fruit-forward profile with just enough oak and spice to keep things interesting. In its club tasting, it took top honours, winning over palates with its easy-drinking style and clever balance. It was the kind of dram that made tasters smile and pour a second without hesitation. The nose offered a playful mix of smoke and pineapple, with hints of Opal Fruits and soft vanilla. On the palate, that tropical theme continued, lemon, lime, and barley water layered over a gentle oak backbone. It was smooth, expressive, and refreshingly different. A whisky that didn’t try to be complex, but nailed its brief with confidence. But when it stepped into the Champion of Champions 2020, the tone shifted. Against a lineup of heavier hitters— older, bolder, and more layered, Two Tone was outshone. Its lightness, which once felt refreshing, now read as simplicity. The fruit and finesse were still there, but they couldn’t compete with the depth and gravitas of the other contenders.
