Lagavulin 16 years

Score: 70

Lagavulin 16 Year Old came in fifth place in its tasting a surprising result for a whisky often hailed as a modern classic. Matured for 16 years in a mix of ex-bourbon and sherry casks, it’s a powerhouse of maritime character and smoky depth. The nose is unmistakable: waves of peat smoke, iodine, seaweed, and charred oak, softened by hints of vanilla, dried fruit, and a touch of medicinal sweetness. On the palate, it’s rich and layered, smoke, leather, tobacco, and salted caramel swirl together with earthy spice and a whisper of citrus. The finish is long, warming, and slightly drying, with echoes of cigar ash, eucalyptus, and briny depth. Its lower ranking wasn’t a reflection of quality, but rather a clash with inexperienced palates, which the club was in the early days. For those new to Islay’s bold style, Lagavulin 16 can be overwhelming, its intensity, medicinal notes, and peaty punch demand a seasoned tongue. Among peat lovers, though, it remains a benchmark dram: uncompromising, evocative, and deeply satisfying.
