Royal Lochnager 12 years

Score: 60

Royal Lochnagar 12 Year Old came in last place in the tasting, a disappointing result for a whisky with royal pedigree but little presence. Despite its elegant presentation and historical prestige, it failed to leave a lasting impression, offering a profile that was weak, restrained, and ultimately unremarkable. It pours a light amber, with appealing aromas of toffee, lychee, citrus, coffee, and a hint of oak. The nose is pleasant, even refined, and the palate follows with a medium-bodied, fruity profile. There’s a touch of light smoke, some suede-like texture, and a whisper of licorice, but the overall experience lacks impact. The finish is long and warm, but lacks definition. It flatters the palate, but never quite delivers a memorable close. As one member put it, “Perfect as a starter or match alongside dried fruits and cheeses,” which is polite club-speak for “not the dram you came for.” It’s elegant, yes—but elegance without conviction. A whisky that’s too careful, too restrained, and best served before the real tasting begins. There’s very little to argue about here, because there’s very little to argue with. A dram that whispers politely, then quietly exits the stage.
