Old Pulteney 18 years
Score: 86
Old Pulteney 18 Year Old came in second place in its tasting, a strong showing for a dram that delivered depth, finesse, and coastal charm. Reminiscent of the discontinued Old Pulteney 17, this expression carries forward the distillery’s signature style with a healthy sherry influence and plenty of wonderful chocolate notes. The nose is rich and layered, offering dark fruits, cinnamon-spiced cookie dough, mature oak, and a touch of charcoal. On the palate, it’s a balanced interplay of dark chocolate and green apple, with waves of vanilla, rye bread, and a subtle smoky undertone. There’s light smoke throughout, never overpowering, but always present, like a distant bonfire on a coastal breeze. The finish is of moderate length, clean, slightly salty, with hints of citrus, wet grass, and a whisper of sea air. It doesn’t quite soar, but it rounds off the experience gracefully. As one member put it: “A solid dram and a lovely way to end the evening.” There’s very little to argue about here. Old Pulteney 18 is a blend of tradition and refinement, capable of competing with more than a few single malts out there. No bells and whistles needed, this is a true testimony to the art of distilling, and a whisky that earned its place with quiet confidence.
