Grand Old Parr 12 years
Score: 69
Old Parr 12 Year Old is a blend that commands respect. It not only won its tasting, but also came runner-up in the club’s Champion of Champions 2019, a testament to its consistency, charm, and craftsmanship. In a room full of single malts, Old Parr held its own and then some. The nose is warm and inviting, with honey, dried fruit, orange peel, and a touch of medicinal funk. There’s a sherried richness, likely thanks to its Cragganmore-led malt base, and a subtle layer of oak and spice. On the palate, it’s chewy and full-bodied, offering caramel, nutmeg, stewed fruit, and a hint of tobacco. The blend feels mature and well-integrated, delivering a moorish and gratifying experience that pulls you in. The finish isn’t remarkable, but it’s clean and lingers just enough. Still, there is very little to argue about here. This is a blend that could compete with more than a few single malts out there, and it did. No bells and whistles needed. This is a true testimony to the art of blending. A whisky that’s smooth, mellow, and full-flavored, crafted with care and built to impress. It may not be flashy, but it’s earned its place in club lore.
