Glenmorangie A Tale of Cake brought a splash of whimsy to the 2023 Champion of Champions, finishing 4th in a fiercely competitive lineup. Created by Dr. Bill Lumsden and finished in Tokaji dessert wine casks, it’s a dram designed to evoke the joy of cake, literally. The nose is a confectioner’s dream: pineapple upside-down cake, honey, apricot, and vanilla frosting. On the palate, that sweetness continues with notes of honey, marzipan, creamy vanilla, and tropical fruit. The texture is rich and velvety, enhancing the indulgent experience. The finish lingers with soft spice and a dessert-like aftertaste, sweet, warming, and playful. Its 4th place finish reflects both its charm and its limits. While it delighted with its creativity and easy appeal, it lacked the depth or gravitas of the top-tier drams. A Tale of Cake is a whisky that makes you smile, not necessarily pause in reverence.
