Teeling Single Malt Whiskey
Score: 40
Teeling Single Malt showed up as the Irish standard—decent, easy-going, and dressed for a good time. But for many in the club, it didn’t quite deliver the surprise they were hoping for. One member even asked, “Wait… is this even whisky? A moment that summed up the confusion and underwhelm. The nose offered a fruit-forward bouquet, think honeydew, apricot, and citrus—with hints of vanilla and soft spice. It’s matured in five wine casks (Sherry, Port, Madeira, White Burgundy, and Cabernet Sauvignon), which should’ve added complexity. But on the night, it came across as hot, with a spicy finish that lingered more than it charmed. A “hot” number, yes—but not in the seductive sense. Despite its pedigree and smooth reputation, Teeling felt like a whisky trying to be liked, rather than one that demanded respect. It’s approachable, sure, but in this lineup, it lacked the gravitas to stand out. The club wanted fireworks; Teeling brought sparklers. It didn’t come last, but it didn’t win hearts either. A dram that might shine solo, but in a tasting lineup, it was more background music than headline act. It was a well deserved dead last by some margin in the inaugural tasting.
