Cardhu 12 Year Old, bottled at 40% ABV, was the quiet underperformer in its club tasting, finishing last. A soft and delicate Speyside malt, it’s not the most complex whisky on the shelf, but it does carry a gentle presence—never overbearing, yet never quite captivating either. The nose offers honeyed sweetness and light fruit, while the palate leans into smooth, food-friendly notes that would pair nicely with grilled meats or creamy desserts. However, some found its body slightly out of balance, with a peppery bite that disrupted the otherwise mellow flow. It’s not aggressive and therein lies the rub: for a crowd seeking bold character or layered nuance, Cardhu 12 felt a bit too safe, a bit too bland. Still, its easygoing nature might appeal in quieter moments or as a companion to a meal, rather than a centerpiece dram.
