Caol Ila Moch

Score: 65

Caol Ila Moch—Gaelic for “dawn”—earned a well-deserved third place in the club’s tasting lineup, quietly outshining expectations with its youthful finesse and layered charm. Bottled at 43% ABV, this NAS (No Age Statement) Islay malt is a compelling counterpoint to its older sibling, the 12 Year Old, and a reminder that age isn’t always the final word in quality. The first impression was deceptively raw—almost new-make spirit—but that illusion dissolved within seconds, giving way to a sweet, softly smoked character. The nose carries more smoke than the palate, with gentle peat mingling with raspberries, hints of chocolate, and faint, non-aromatic apples. It’s a fluent, balanced dram: the sweetness and smoke dance rather than clash, and the mouthfeel is smooth without being oily. Club members noted its elegance and restraint, less aggressive than the 12yo, yet more expressive in its fruit and texture. It’s a whisky that doesn’t shout but speaks clearly. A quiet triumph, and a great reminder that craft and composition can outshine age when done right.
