BenRiach 12 years Sherrywood
Score: 75
BenRiach 12 stepped into the Champion of Champions tasting with understated confidence—and nearly stole the show. It came in as a runner-up to the ultimate winner, but left a lasting impression with its elegant sherry influence and nuanced fruit profile. From the first pour, the sherry cask influence is clear: dried fruit compote, cranberries, cherries, and a touch of rose buds—floral, but not overly sweet. The nose is dry and refined, with hints of oak and cocoa weaving through. There’s milk chocolate with raisins, but again, less sweetness than expected—more texture than indulgence. As it opens, the second nose gains depth and charm. Blueberries and red fruit emerge, balanced by a subtle earthiness and a whisper of polished wood. It’s a dram that rewards patience, evolving gently in the glass. On the palate, it’s composed and layered. No smoke, no peat, just a clean, fruit-forward profile with cocoa, dried berries, and a restrained sweetness. The finish is medium, dry, and quietly satisfying. BenRiach 12 didn’t take the crown, but it came close. A great runner-up, elegant, expressive, and a reminder that sherry doesn’t need to shout to be heard. In a lineup of heavy hitters, it held its own with grace.
