Balblair 18 years

Club Whisky
Region: Highlands

Balblair 18 was a club bottle only, brought out for a special tasting, and met with a mix of intrigue and mild confusion. One member, after a thoughtful sip, asked: “Is this bourbon?” And with its rich oak, spice, and leathery depth, the question wasn’t entirely off base. In the glass, it poured rather dark and murky for a single malt, straddling gold and copper, with a hue reminiscent of a well-worn cricket ball after a long day in the field. The nose offered toffee and canned pears, layered with cut and dried grass and a distinct note of old leather, evocative of the stitching and polish of that same ball. On the palate, the silky texture delivered more toffee, with stone fruit notes evolving into pears and apricots. Then came the spice - bold, warming, and relentless. It surged through the finish like a fast bowler on a hot afternoon, running off down the block and leaving a trail of heat and oak. Though it wasn’t ranked, being a club bottle only, it stirred conversation. Some admired its depth, others questioned its identity, and a few simply nodded, quietly enjoying the leathery nostalgia and spicy kick. Not a crowd-pleaser, but certainly a character.
